Hydrangeas and the Mysterious Blooms
Every season without fail I am asked; “My blue Hydrangea bloomed beautiful for the first two years and now it doesn’t; why?” Before I knew the science behind it, I would shrug and say it was the hybrid especially the Endless Summer Bloomer variety which I coined as Endless Bummers and this was back in 2009 to 2017. I mean everyone in the industry I knew had the same answer. Until I finally arrived at the answer which was given to me by Peter Flynn from Baystate Perennial Farm in Whately, MA.
His answer was simple: Eastern Exposure and don’t prune it till spring. Yes it is that simple and he is right. Bigleaf Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) do not like full sun exposure and it needs to be protected from deer. Deer tend to graze more towards the end of fall and during the winter months, but there are repellents that work. Here we’ve had success with Irish Spring soap shaved along the edges of the plants.
