There are four components that need to be addressed to ensure a successful all Organic Turf Care Program:
- Soil Chemistry: Create and maintain a hospitable environment for growing turf.
- Soil Structure: Promote the porosity and nutrient holding capacity of the soil to maintain aerobic life and allow air and water flow.
- Soil Biology: Feed the microbes in the soil, so in turn, they can feed the plant.
- Cultural Practices: Proper mowing, aeration, over-seeding and irrigation practices.
Comprehensive Soil Testing
A soil test provides necessary information to customize an efficient turf management program. (Generally is best done before your first treatment and in early fall to check amended soil conditions)
Fertilizers contain certain nutrients that are essential to a healthy soil, therefor a healthy lawn. We use a combination of slow release and quick release granular formulation that will feed your lawn for 6-8 weeks. Fertilizing helps to keep your grass greener, have stronger root systems, and make it more disease and weather resistant. A healthier lawn will also help to keep weeds from finding a spot to take root. (We recommend this treatment 3 to 4 times per year)
Slice Seeding/over seeding
Over seeding thin lawns, or thin lawn areas, is the best organic practice to prevent new weeds in the Spring and Fall. A healthy dense lawn will crowd out the weeds. This treatment is best done in early Spring or early Fall. (We recommend this treatment 1 to 2 times per year based on the needs of your lawn) Slice seeding is an effective way to over seed any thin lawn areas.
Core aeration is beneficial for your lawn in many ways. Soil can become compacted over time, especially if the soil has higher clay content, or if the turf is in a high foot traffic area. This can limit the ability of turf grass to grow deep and healthy roots. Core aeration relieves soil compaction by removing “plugs” of soil and organic material and depositing them back onto your lawn. This allows the roots to grow deeper and helps them become more tolerant to weather and disease. Thatch can also become a problem over time. Thatch is a small layer of dead and living organic material that can build up in your lawn. Some thatch is healthy, but too much can lead to lawn disease and insect infestation. When the “plugs” are deposited back on your lawn it helps speed up the natural decomposition process. Other benefits include: Improved air exchange, increased soil water uptake, enhanced fertilizer uptake, reduced runoff, and puddling. (We recommend this service 1 to 2 times per year, ideally to be done in the Spring and Fall)
Post-emergent weed treatment with fertilizer
Not all weeds can be controlled with over seeding and fertilizing. Some weeds, such as perennial broadleaf weeds are most likely already in your lawn. This treatment combined with fertilizer is one of the most effective in controlling weeds. (We recommend this treatment to be applied 2 times per year)
Lime is the most natural organic way to balance the pH in your soil. It is very important in order to have healthy turf to control the pH level. A low pH in your soil will lead to decreased nutrient uptake, causing a loss of color, reduced ability to recover from drought and heat stress, and decreased growth rates. Turf grass does best when the pH is between 6.0-7.0. A simple soil test can be done to determine the soil pH. (We recommend this treatment to be applied 1 to 2 times a year depending on the soil pH, best applied in the fall)
Grub control should be applied for preventative results. By the time the grubs have hatched, the treatment will be worked into the soil, keeping the grubs from feeding, effectively eliminating them. If grubs have already established themselves a curative grub control can be applied in the Spring or early Fall. (No Organic option at this time). Organic grub control consists of 6 treatments over a 2 year period, and focus’ on Japanese Beatle larva. For more extensive larvae control, a non-organic option is available.
******Introducing Fully Organic Tick Control******
Our organic tick control treatment, works by killing ticks and mosquitoes on contact. It also creates a barrier that will help to control ticks for up to 60 days, and mosquitos for up to a month. (We recommend this treatment to be applied 3 to 4 times per year)
